What’s on the Easel ? #5

Welcome …. to, What’s on the Easel , where we talk about everything art , that’s happening at the , Lisa Lovely LPA Art Museum, I am your host , Art , and we try real hard to publish this blog , first thing in the morning every , Tuesday ! See you then !

Art : Welcome , everyone , Welcome , Lisa Lovely LPA ,to our often very brief blog, where I ask , as always , What the heck is on the Easel ??

Lisa Lovely LPA : lol What’s on the Easel is our new painting , a 24x24 inch , acrylic painting on wood panel.

Art : … and how is that going ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : It’s moving along nicely , we are at that exciting moment, when the painting comes to life , and it’s all starting to make sense.

Art : Now you have said once , you don’t really know where a painting is heading when you start ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : yes , that’s so , when I start a painting , often , it’s like being in a fog , I can see what’s ahead but it’s all kinda cloudy , and when I get through the fog and start to see where I am , it’s a very exciting, moment , and that’s , where we are now , in this painting.

Art : So , you don’t plan everything ahead of time ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : No. The creative moment, happens on the canvas. I am surprised , as anyone , when it’s all done.

Art : Would it be easier to do some pre sketching , studies etc. , before getting started ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : It would make perfect sense , to do that but I don’t do it that way lol

Art : Why ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : I know there are many artist that plan out everything before doing the painting , very useful , but I need to start on the canvas , in a bit of a fog, when there is some confusion , something inside takes over , a kind of quiet voice , guides my hands , and I discover , what is happening inside and I have to get it down into the painting , before , I start thinking too much.

Art : So you don’t plan at all ??

Lisa Lovely LPA : There is some planning , sure , nothing is so cut and dry , in my painting , but in general , I tend to lean in the direction of working in the fog. When I can’t see, then things happen.

Art : Anything in this painting , that helps , illustrate this foggy painting.

Lisa Lovely LPA : ( LOL and a witchy giggle ) .. yeah … like the tree … if we want to paint a tree often the canopy has some, symmetry .. at least the ideal tree … does … you know the tree in a perfect world .. but when I put down this tree … one side of it , went way off to the right … right to the far right edge of the painting …

Well … it didn’t sit well with me .. yeah , trees come in all shapes , but this was a sycamore, and composition wise , it seemed very awkward….

Art : ( sipping coffee ) Soo what happened ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : I went to bed lol I thought to myself , I need to erase that , in the morning , it was bad , but I woke up and decided to let it stay , then thought , nah , erase it !

Sigh !

Art : lol

Lisa Lovely LPA : It wasn’t really until a week later , I realized what was happening…

Art : ohhhhh ???

Lisa Lovely LPA : If you look with your , witchy eyes , you might see the part of the tree canopy , that extends off to the right , has the shape of an, Ichthyosaur !

Art : A what ??? lol

Lisa Lovely LPA : ( rolling eyes ) the Ichthyosaur , lol , the sea creature , that swims in the seas of , Nevada !

Art : But they are all dead ! The sea is gone, dried up.

Lisa Lovely LPA : Extinct , but this one came to visit me , while I sat parked , in Reno , under the sycamore, but I never realized it , until , I started to paint.

The boy is walking on the back of the , Ichthyosaur.

Art : … and where he come from if they are all dead , extinct ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : Came out of the fog lol

Art : The fog , like the movie the Fog ? lol

Lisa Lovely LPA : No, lol , silly , from deep within the psyche.

Art : That psyche stuff again.

Lisa Lovely LPA : LoL yes , and not the imagination ! But she never would have visited if I sat at the painting , with it all figured out. I would have ended up with a tree in the painting , just a tree. Maybe a very picturesque tree but , no, ichthyosaur.

That point of confusion , that fog , is paramount to making the kind of art , I make.

Art : I want to say lol … we are out of time ,it’s getting too witchy for me lol .. we almost are out of time , one tip for the new acrylic painter , what size canvas is best to start with when first starting to paint ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : Ofcourse, there is no simple answer, not too big , not too small lol , is probably good starting advice , I think if a new painter went to the local hobby store , get one of those , 50 % off coupons , and bought a big package of , 16x20 inch canvases , that would be a great way to start.

Art : Those are good quality ?

Lisa Lovely LPA : Plenty good , they are already , primed with gesso , but get a good gesso and add a couple of coats and you are set to go.

If you can’t afford a big package of canvases , just get one canvas , and get started !

Then as you get into it , go , bigger or smaller as you will.

Art : With that we are definitely, out of time !

Bye everyone , thanks everyone for tuning in , thanks Lisa and we will see you next week , when I ask , What’s on the Easel ?

Bye !!!
